Sahila Beegum

Bio Summary

Sahila Beegum joined as a Research Assistant Professor at the Nebraska Water Center in October 2023. Dr. Sahila was a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at the same center before becoming a Research Assistant Professor. She is actively collaborating with the Adaptive Cropping Systems Laboratory, USDA-ARS Maryland, on several soil-plant-atmospheric continuum research and process-based model development projects. She is the recipient of Fulbright fellowship, DAAD-IGCS fellowship,  scholarships for both her Masters and PhD programs, as well as multiple travel fellowships. She has served as a visiting researcher at the University of California, Riverside, USA, and Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany. She earned her doctoral degree from the Hydraulics and Water Resources Engineering Division at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, India. Her master's degree is in Hydraulics and Water Resources Engineering, and her bachelor's degree is in Civil Engineering. When she's not immersed in research, she's a talented artist, wielding oil paint on canvas, and her art has earned recognition from the former President of India.

RESEARCH INTERESTS 

With expertise in soil, groundwater, and mechanistic-process-based crop modeling, her research interests lie in developing and improving the mathematical representation of soil-crop-atmospheric interactions. Specifically, her research focuses on various aspects of soil, including water and solute transport in unsaturated-saturated soil zones, dynamics of soil carbon, nitrogen, and gas transport in soil, as well as soil carbon dioxide respiration from agricultural regions. Additionally, she possesses strong skills in simulation model conceptualization and development, data analysis, statistics, and spatial data analysis.

SOIL-PLANT ATMOSPHERIC CONTINUUM RESEARCH GROUP

She is working towards establishing a Soil-Plant Atmospheric Continuum Research group to advance her research in this direction.
