The U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the National Institutes for Water Resources supports an annual call for proposals to focus on water problems and issues that are of a regional or interstate nature or relate to a specific program priority identified by the Secretary of the Interior and the Institutes.
The goals of the National Competitive Grants program are to promote collaboration between the USGS and university scientists in research on significant national and regional water resources issues; promote the dissemination and results of the research funded under this program; and to assist in the training of scientists in water resources.
Any investigator at an accredited institution of higher learning in the United States is eligible to apply for a grant through a Water Research Institute or Center established under the provisions of the Water Resources Research Act of 1984.
Proposals are accepted under the 104g General program, which supports a wide range of research topics, 104g PFAS which funds research that specifically focuses on PFAS, and the 104g AIS (Aquatic Invasive Species) program.
Proposals involving collaboration between the USGS and university scientists are highly encouraged but not required. Proposals may be for projects of 1 to 3 years in duration with discreet 12-month budget periods. Investigators must match one non-federal dollar to each federal dollar requested.
The 2025 104g General, PFAS, and AIS RFPs are linked below. It is imperative that you read and follow the required guidelines to ensure that your proposal package is complete at the time of final NURamp submission.
All PI's are required to work with your grant liaisons and/or business office to route applications using NURamp for ORED to make the final submission to USGS by September 30, 2025 at 4:00pm CT.
If you have questions about the 104g RFPs or application process, please contact NWC Program Assistant, Tricia Liedle, pliedle@nebraska.edu or 402-472-3305.
