Getting Involved with Wetlands
(From "America's Wetlands, Our Vital Link Between Land and Water," U.S. Environmental Protection Agency)
Getting involved in wetlands is easy and something we all can do.
Helping preserve and restore wetlands is essential in keeping these unique and valuable ecosystems thriving. Some projects people can get involved in include:
- Finding compatible uses for wetlands, rather than filling or draining them. These might include waterfowl production, fur harvesting, hay and forage production, hunting and trapping leases and timber harvesting.
- Finding ways to avoid altering or degrading a wetland during a construction or development project.
- Donating wetlands, or money to buy wetland acres, to private or public conservation organizations.
- Work to keep wetlands and adjacent buffer strips as open spaces.
- Support wetland conservation initiatives by public agencies and private organizations.
- Buy federal duck stamps to support acquiring wetlands.
- Let your local, state and national representatives know what your position is on wetlands preservation.
