Keeping Water in Your Life

All of us can help conserve and use water wisely. It's not hard to do.

For example, by checking for leaks and being time conscious when you're running water you can save thousands of gallons each year.

In the Bathroom

  • Turn off the water while brushing or shaving.
  • Take shorter showers or bathe in a partially filled tub.
  • Don't use the toilet as a waste can or ashtray.

In the Kitchen and Laundry

  • Wash vegetables in a sink or pan of water, instead of letting the water run.
  • Don't leave the water running when you're rinsing dishes.
  • Keep a jar of water in the refrigerator for cold drinks instead of letting the water run until it's cool.
  • Use the dishwasher and clothes washer only for full loads.
  • Minimize use of your garbage disposal. When it runs, large quantities of water go down the drain.

Outside the Home

  • Water the lawn and garden with good sense; only when they need it and be sure the water goes only on the area to be watered.
  • Don't leave the sprinkler on all day. Water in the cool part of the day.
  • Wash your car with a bucket of water. Only use the hose to rinse it afterwards.

Be a Conserver

  • Be careful not to let the water run any more than needed.
  • Check every faucet, toilet, pool, hose and pipe for leaks.
  • Install water-saving devices like reduced-flow showerheads and low-flow toilets.
